Fees and rebates
The Australian Psychological Society recommended hourly fee for psychologists in 2021 is $260. Our standard fees are $210 per consultation hour, with a $10 surcharge for after-hours appointments (Saturday appointments and appointments outside 9am-5pm weekdays). We do not charge any additional fee for couples therapy.
Medicare rebates are available for psychological treatment of eligible mental health conditions with psychologists. You will be able to claim a proportion of your fees from Medicare if your doctor assesses you to be eligible for psychological services under Medicare, and if you have a referral with a "care plan" from your GP. If you have a Medicare care plan, Medicare will reimburse up to $128.40 per session for up to 10 sessions per calendar year, or 20 if you are adversely affected by COVID-19.
Alternatively, a proportion of your fees may be redeemable from your private health insurance, depending on your health plan.
Fees for sessions with counsellors are $190 during office hours, with a $10 surcharge for after hours appointments. As counselling appointments concern general life difficulties rather than mental health treatment (for instance relationship difficulties, life transitions, coping, meaning, or navigating change) they do not attact Medicare rebates.
Appointments are typically 50-60 minutes long. During your initial appointment your psychologist or counsellor will aim to gain a detailed understanding of you and your needs, which is important so that subsequent sessions are relevant and helpful to you.
